In 1824, the Marquis de Lafayette, the French patriot and the last living general from the Revolutionary War in MA, toured the young United States and was met everywhere with universal acclaim verging on hysteria. Today, the American Friends of Lafayette (AFL) is commemorating the Bicentennial of Lafayette’s U.S. tour with programs all along his original route through 24 states. Join the AFL’s Peter Reilly for a program that captures the enthusiasm of Lafayette’s reception, offers a whirlwind spin through his life, and discusses how the state of the world appeared to Americans at the time, as well as Lafayette’s effect on the contentious presidential election of 1824 and the peaceful transition of power that followed.
