Parking: Sheomet Lake (also known locally as Clubhouse Pond). Going east on Athol Road in Warwick, go left at the easternmost entrance to the lake (about 0.5 miles from the first entrance) and then about 0.1 miles to the parking lot.
Special notes: Parts of Tully Brook Road can be flooded at times; the speed limit on Athol Road is 50 mph and there is no sidewalk.
Description:
This pleasant hike travels clockwise along old country roads and a section of the Tully Trail and has the added benefit of starting and ending at a swimmable lake.
Walk over the bridge on Old Athol Road; the lake and dam will be on your right. As you continue along the lake, you may spot several tempting places for a dip after your hike. (There is also a small beach near the parking lot). At about 0.4 miles, go right at the tee stop onto Tully Brook Road. The pavement soon ends, and the road turns to dirt. (For one more peek at the lake, at about 0.6 miles, you can take the short spur back and forth on your right). At about 1.3 miles, bear right at the intersection, and do the same again at 1.5 miles. The road now starts to climb; continue past the large boulders on your left and at about 1.7 miles, you will see the entrance to the yellow rectangular-blazed Tully Trail on your right. Almost immediately, the trail ascends slightly; at the top of the rise, look for the substantial cellar hole on the left. The trail undulates, sometimes bearing left and sometimes right. When the trail bears right at about 2.8 miles, you will need to climb up and over some rocks which can be slippery when wet. After this point, the trail is mostly downhill. At about 3.2 miles, go right and down onto Bliss Hill Road. At the end of the road at about 3.7 miles, go right onto Athol Road. Go right again at about 3.9 miles to the entrance to Sheomet Lake and back to the parking lot.
