Description:

This hike is a nice combination of woods, a stream, a wetland, and an old country road.

Starting at the intersection of Bass Road and the New England Trail, go east (left) onto the New England Trail (marked with white rectangular blazes). As you approach the stream, the trail will bear to the left, then almost immediately to the right, and then cross the stream via a bridge. The trail continues somewhat steeply uphill for a short distance. At the top of the hill, take the unmarked trail on the left. (The New England Trail continues straight). Shortly, you will pass through an impressive old stand of tall red pines. Crane your neck and look up to appreciate their height. The trail continues through the woods and crosses another bridge. As you approach Northfield Road, you will come to a vee where you can see Northfield Road ahead on the right. You can go either right or left to reach Northfield Road but if you go left, you will be in the woods a bit longer. When you reach Northfield Road, go left for about 0.4 miles and then go left onto Bass Road. At the intersection of Bass and Northfield Roads, you may want to pause at Bass Swamp; moose, otters, beavers, waterfowl and other wildlife are sometimes spotted here. In the very early fall, the red maple trees that surround the swamp put on quite a show. Continue onto Bass Road to the starting point of the hike.
