Description:
This clockwise hike is a nice alternative to hiking around Stevens Swamp (see Stevens Swamp Loop) when the ground is very wet and/or muddy in the wetland area on the south side of the swamp.
Proceed north on Flagg Road, away from the pond. In about 0.1 miles, go left (west) at the trailhead. Follow the light blue rectangular blazed trail through the many stands of mountain laurel, keeping the pond and then the wetland on your left. At about 0.8 miles, you will see two trees ahead with the letter “I” painted on them; these trees point upward to the “Indian Cave”. Climb up the short rise until you reach the cave. (Watch out for porcupine quills!) With the cave on your left, go right and up the short but steep embankment, keeping the stone ledge on your left. At the end of the ledge, turn around and follow the yellow circular blazed trail as it meanders mostly north through the woods. At about 1.2 miles, proceed right (east) onto the old dirt country road. At about 1.8 miles, proceed right (south) onto Flagg Road and back to where you parked.
